The National Informatics Centre (NIC), Jammu & Kashmir, organised a technical workshop on “MongoDB – A Modern Database Technology” in collaboration with MongoDB, with the objective of creating awareness and strengthening the technical capabilities of NIC officers in modern database technologies and their application in contemporary e-Governance solutions.
The workshop was presided over by Sh. Jaskaran Singh Modi, DDG & State Informatics Officer (SIO), NIC J&K, and held in hybrid mode at the Civil Secretariat, Jammu. It witnessed participation from more than 70 NIC sites across India, including officers and officials from the NIC J&K UT Unit, District Centres, Lok Bhawan and High Court, along with NIC officers and technical teams from across the country.
The workshop focused on the growing relevance of modern non-relational/NoSQL database technologies in application development and digital governance. MongoDB, a widely adopted document-oriented database platform, offers flexibility, scalability, high performance and ease of development, making it relevant for a wide range of contemporary application architectures and workloads.
The technical session was delivered by Sh. Rajat Bhasin, Manager, Solutions Architect, MongoDB India, who provided insights into MongoDB architecture, document-oriented data modelling and the key concepts of NoSQL databases. He also presented a comparative perspective on relational and non-relational database technologies, highlighting their respective strengths, limitations and suitability for different application requirements.
The workshop covered the key features and functionalities of MongoDB and its applicability across diverse use cases, including Real-Time Analytics, Content Management, Workflow and File Management, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Geospatial Applications, Payment Transactions, Dashboards and Analytics, Mainframe Modernization and Operational Data Layers.
The technical discussions also highlighted the role of MongoDB in modern application architectures, particularly microservices-based applications, API-driven architectures, application modernization and scalable, high-performance applications.
An interactive Question & Answer session was also conducted, providing participants an opportunity to seek technical clarifications and discuss practical aspects of MongoDB adoption, architecture and its suitability for various application scenarios.
The workshop aimed to enable NIC technical teams to better understand and evaluate the advantages, limitations, technical suitability and potential areas of adoption of MongoDB for appropriate applications and workloads. It also provided a platform for technical officers from different NIC locations to share perspectives and enhance their understanding of emerging database technologies.
The initiative reflects NIC’s continued focus on technical capacity building, knowledge sharing and adoption of emerging technologies for strengthening digital governance and supporting the development of secure, scalable, modern and citizen-centric e-Governance solutions.
The participation of more than 70 NIC sites across India underscored the significance of the workshop as a collaborative technical learning initiative and provided a common platform for NIC officers and technical teams to engage with emerging database technologies.
